Train No. 12578 Mysuru-Darbhanga Bagmati Superfast Express is said to have entered a circular line and collided with a stopped good train, railway sources said.

At least 12 coaches of the Mysuru-Darbhanga Bagmati Superfast Express derailed and one coach caught fire after the train collided with a stalled freight train near Chennai on Friday.

“12-13 coaches of train no 12578 (MYS-DBG) Mysore to Darbhanga were derailed after colliding with a goods train at around 8.30 pm. No causal relationship has been reported. Several people were injured. The medical van and rescue team started moving from Chennai headquarters,” Southern Railway said in a statement.

The railways also said that the fire engulfed by the parcel van was quickly extinguished.

The accident took place at Kavarapettai, which falls under Chennai railway division, when train number 12578 Mysuru-Darbhanga Bagmati Superfast Express passed through Ponneri station at around 8.27 pm and was given a green signal to pass through Kavaraipettai next station on the main line. While entering Kavaraipettai station, the train crew experienced a severe jerk and instead of entering the main line, it entered the circular line and hit the stationary freight train.

However, no casualties were reported, but several passengers were injured. They were all taken to nearby hospitals.

Tiruvallur District Collector T. Prabhushankar, senior government officials and the Separate Railway Manager (DRM), Chennai, Southern Railway have rushed to the spot. Tamil Nadu Police said rescue teams and ambulances were on their way to the scene.

In the meantime, alternative arrangements have been made to transport or accommodate the passengers.
