70th National Film Awards: Rishabh Shetty, AR Rahman, Mithun Chakraborty felicitate

The 70th National Film Awards felicitated artists and directors from the Indian film industry at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi on Tuesday (Oct 08, 2024). President Draupadi Murmu presented the prestigious awards to the winners.

Scale star Rishabh Shetty was felicitated for Best Actor in a leading role. Rishabh told the media that his motive is to make films to change the society. “Every film has an impact. I thank the audience. The National Award is a very prestigious award for an artiste,” he told reporters. Scale also won the Best Popular Film award for providing wholesome entertainment.

Veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty has received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India’s highest honor in cinema, for his outstanding contribution to the film industry. The president and other guests present at the celebration gave the legendary actor a standing ovation.

In an earlier interview with YEARSMithun Chakraborty expressed happiness over the award. “I can only say that I dedicate this award to my family and all my fans around the world. Where I come from, a cul-de-sac in Kolkata, I never imagined that a boy from the footpath could get such a big honour.”

The award for Best Actress in a Lead Role was shared by Nithya Menen for the Tamil film Tiruchitrambalam and Manasi Parekh for the Gujarati film Kutch Express. Sooraj R Barjatya also bagged the Best Director award for his work in Unchai. Malayalam movie Atham was named Best Feature Film at the awards.

Nithya Menen said, “It feels great and it’s a very important moment. I would like to dedicate the award to my colleagues and the entire team of Tiruchitrambalam.

Music maestro AR Rahman, who won his seventh National Film Award, said he was really proud of the honour. He received the award for Best Music Director (Background Score) for his work in Mani Ratnam’s Poniyin Selvan: Me.

“This award is special because it is my seventh national award. My first National Film Award was for the film Roja with Mani Ratnam. This movie is also with him. Whenever I work with him it’s very special, he brings out the best in all of us,” he said. Helmed by Mani Ratnam, the film stars southern actors Vikram, Trisha Krishnan Karthik Sivakumar, Jayam Ravi and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in lead roles.

Actor Manoj Bajpayee won his fourth National Film Award as he received a special mention for his performance in the film Gulmohar. On winning the award Manoj in an interview with YEARS expressed gratitude to the audience and thanked the director and other colleagues from the film.

“It’s a huge thing when such a small film is felt at the National Film Awards, I’m honoured. I also can’t take all the credit to myself. I thank my director who offered me this film and all the people who worked with me, all the co-actors who supported my work,” he said.

The winners of the 70th National Film Awards were announced in August 2024. Due to delays related to the Covid pandemic, the National Awards were a year behind schedule.
