More AI features are on the way for Gmail users, but not all

Google offers Gemini AI in all forms for the users and the AI feature will now help you with smart answers.

Google is rolling out a new feature in the Gmail app called Contextual Smart Replies. The AI feature allows users to quickly respond to incoming emails. Compared to the smart reply feature, which dates back to 2017, the context version is designed to send detailed replies.

The AI tool can analyze the context of an email and suggest responses that are “tailored to your conversation.” It should be noted that the feature powered by Gemini is only available to Google Workspace users.

After initiating a reply to an email, users will see multiple reply suggestions appear at the bottom of the screen based on the full content of the email thread in a carousel format.

Each proposal features a different tone and theme. Users can preview the first few words of the title and content by long-pressing any answer. By tapping Reply, the AI tool will generate a complete email response, including a salutation and closing, multiple long paragraphs, and all the information the sender is looking for. Users can also make further edits and add more information before submitting.

“We’re excited to announce a new Gemini feature in Gmail, Contextual Smart Replies, which will offer more detailed responses to fully capture the intent of your message,” reads the Google Workspace Updates post.

It’s worth noting that the “Smart Features & Personalization” option needs to be enabled in Gmail to access this feature.

The contextual smart replies feature is currently being rolled out to Google Workspace users. This app-based feature is available to Gemini Business, Enterprise, Education, Education Premium and Google One AI Premium subscribers on both Android and iOS. The feature currently only supports English.

Google introduced the Smart Reply feature in Gmail in 2017, using machine learning to suggest three short one-line replies to emails. With this new feature, the tech giant aims to provide more detailed responses by contextualizing email content using Gemini and suggesting responses that are most relevant to the conversation.
