UN Peacebuilding Fund Hits $1 Billion Milestone, But Faces Major Funding Gap
UN Peacebuilding Fund Reaches $1 Billion Milestone, But $500 Million Shortfall Remains. The United Nations Peacebuilding Fund (PBF) has reached a historic $1 billion funding milestone, marking a significant boost for the organisation’s efforts to support nations emerging from conflict. However, officials warn that a $500 million shortfall remains for the 2020–2026 cycle, limiting the Fund’s ability to respond to rising global peacebuilding demands.
The PBF, a multi-donor trust fund, serves as the UN’s primary financing tool for conflict-affected countries, operating alongside the Peacebuilding Commission and the Peacebuilding Support Office. It currently assists more than 50 countries, nearly 75% of which are in Africa.
Historic Milestone Announced After Twin UN Resolutions
The funding achievement was announced in New York by Elizabeth Spehar, head of the Peacebuilding Support Office, and Macharia Kamau, Chair of the Fund’s Advisory Group. They described the milestone as an important step toward delivering the Secretary-General’s call for a “quantum leap” in peacebuilding financing.
The announcement came shortly after both the UN Security Council and the General Assembly adopted matching resolutions reaffirming their support for the UN’s global peacebuilding architecture. The coordinated adoption is only the second of its kind since the framework was first endorsed in 2005.
Spehar noted that the timing of the resolutions and the funding announcement was “very significant,” underscoring unified global commitment to preventing conflict, strengthening institutions, and supporting long-term stability.
$500 Million Funding Gap Threatens Operations
Despite surpassing the $1 billion mark, the Peacebuilding Fund is still $500 million below its target of $1.5 billion for 2020–2026. Officials warned that the funding gap poses serious challenges as demand grows among Member States seeking support for conflict prevention, institution-building and recovery programmes.
The shortfall, they said, restricts the Fund’s capacity to respond rapidly to crises—one of its defining strengths.
UN Calls for Integrated Approach to Peace
The newly adopted resolution stresses that sustainable peace depends on a coordinated effort across development, human rights, and peace and security. It reinforces the UN’s long-standing position that peacebuilding must address root causes rather than rely solely on crisis response.
Both UN bodies urged Member States to boost contributions to ensure the Fund can meet rising global needs.
