Initially, 38 students aged between 8 and 11 were admitted to a civil hospital in Kalwa town after they complained of dizziness, nausea, headache and abdominal pain after lunch on Tuesday

Police have registered an FIR against the management of a private school after 45 children fell ill due to suspected food poisoning after consuming midday meal at the institution near Maharashtra’s Thane city, officials said on Wednesday.

Initially, 38 students aged between 8 and 11 years were admitted to a civil hospital in Kalwa town after they complained of dizziness, nausea, headache and abdominal pain after lunch on Tuesday.

Seven more children were hospitalized late overnight, bringing the total number of minors admitted to the facility to 45, officials said.

Following a complaint by the child’s parents, the Kalwa police registered an FIR against the school management and the caterer under Section 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (endangering personal safety or life of others by rashness or negligence) and FDA regulations, an official said.

So far, no arrests have been made and the case is being investigated, the police said.

The children were being monitored, the hospital’s Medical Officer Dr Aniruddha Malgaonkar told PTI.

Thirty-seven of them were in good health and after the 24-hour admission protocol, they will be discharged at 5 pm, said a Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) official.

The remaining eight children showed symptoms of fever and vomiting. They should remain under observation for another 12 hours, he said.

TMC Additional Commissioner Sandeep Malvi confirmed on Tuesday that the children had midday meal at the private school.

Another medical officer said that the students were served rice and bean (matki) curry as food.

Samples of food served to students were collected by FDA officials.

Five students initially complained of anxiety, and the number gradually grew, according to officials.

“Ambulances were called by the school administration and the students were rushed to the hospital,” they added.

The children’s parents were also present at the hospital.
