After a PhD scholar jumped to dying from a constructing at IIT Kanpur earlier this week, the Schooling Ministry has constituted a three-member committee to “evaluation instances of pupil suicides” on the institute. This was the third such incident at IIT Kanpur up to now 4 months.
The committee will look at the circumstances round these incidents, institutional insurance policies, grievance redressal mechanisms, counselling companies, and different pupil help programs. The panel will probably be headed by Anil Sahasrabudhe, chairman of the NETF, and can comprise Dr Jitendra Nagpal, senior psychiatrist at Moolchand Hospital, and an official of the Schooling Ministry.
The committee has been tasked with ascertaining if IIT Kanpur has been complying with framework pointers that the Ministry issued in 2023 on emotional and psychological well-being of scholars at greater schooling establishments. It is going to determine gaps and areas to be strengthened within the framework for psychological well being and well-being, and can suggest measures to the Ministry on prevention of pupil suicides, and enhancing help.
An order issued by the Ministry on Thursday said that the committee will submit its report in 15 days.
