NEW DELHI: The University of Delhi (DU) has introduced a new option for students to pursue two degrees simultaneously. With this new development, DU will now allow students to enroll in one degree through full-time mode in any DU-affiliated college or department while pursuing a second degree through Open and distance learning (ODL) through its School of Open Learning (SOL).
This policy provides flexibility for current and aspiring students who wish to broaden their academic horizons without having to choose between regular and distance learning. However, it comes with certain conditions. Students cannot enroll in two identical degrees (such as BCom Hons and BCom Pass), even if one is pursued full-time and the other through ODL.
DU allows students to pursue two degrees: eligibility and how to apply
The eligibility criteria for pursuing a dual degree at DU are straightforward but require careful planning. Students must ensure that they meet the academic requirements for both degrees. This means attending classes, completing assignments, and passing assessments for each program individually.
Eligibility
To be eligible for dual degrees, a student must be eligible for both programs separately. The first degree can be acquired through regular attendance at any DU college, while the second must be taken through distance learning through DU’s SOL.
Application process
Students may apply for dual degrees by submitting individual applications for each program. While the application for a full-time degree is submitted through the standard admissions process, the application for the ODL program is submitted to the SOL. It is important to keep an eye on the deadlines as both courses may have different admission and exam deadlines.
Academic overlap
Students should not expect to circumvent any academic requirements. Even if content overlaps between the two degrees, they must complete required first-degree courses (such as environmental science courses or skill-enhancing courses) and replace similar courses in the second degree with appropriate alternatives. For example, if a student is pursuing two undergraduate programs, he or she may substitute a duplicate general elective (GE) course with a different elective from the second program’s pool.

At first glance, this dual degree option seems like an innovative opportunity for students to gain experience in two fields at the same time. However, the question arises: Will the students bite off more than they can chew? Cons of choosing a dual degree
On the other hand, there are several challenges and drawbacks that students should consider before committing to the dual degree route –
Increased workload and stress: The most obvious disadvantage is the large amount of work. Balancing the academic demands of two degrees can quickly become overwhelming, leading to stress, burnout, and even academic underperformance if students are not careful about managing their time and energy.
Compromised depth of learning: While double degrees provide breadth, they can compromise depth. Students who split their time between two programs may not be able to fully engage with either subject, missing out on deep, engaging learning experiences.
Risk of burnout: Managing the expectations of two different degrees—especially when one involves full-time classes and the other requires the self-discipline of distance learning—can lead to burnout. Students must ensure that they possess the organizational skills and resilience required to successfully complete both degrees.
