Indian-origin Canadian MP Chandra Arya has expressed concern over increasing attacks on journalists reporting on Khalistan groups in the country, highlighting several incidents that have occurred in the past few years.

The Canadian MP brought the issue to Parliament, saying that Canada is becoming a place where the nexus between Khalistan groups and gangsters is thriving.

Arya also highlighted the attack on Rishi Nagar, a radio editor at Red FM Calgary, which was first reported by CNN-News 18.

Nagar was critical of certain actions of Khalistan groups and faced an attack by a group of unidentified youths associated with these factions. The incident took place last month while Nagar was on his way to a banquet hall in Rio, and he sustained injuries during the attack.

He also told the House about the March 2023 attack on Samir Kaushal of AM600 radio in Richmond, British Columbia, who was attacked for covering a protest in Khalistan. In February 2022, another Brampton radio host, Deepak Punj, was also attacked in his studio for criticizing Khalistan-related violence.

Arya also mentioned investigative journalist Mocha Bezirgan, who has received death threats for his reporting on Khalistan extremism. He noted that there are many more attacks being carried out in the Greater Toronto Area and across Canada by Khalistan militants.

“I urge law enforcement agencies to treat Khalistan extremism with the seriousness it deserves. Strong action must be taken before it is too late,” the Canadian lawmaker told parliament.

Speaking of CNN-News 18a senior intelligence source said it was a strong statement by the Canadian MP in Parliament against Khalistan militants.

“These attacks only happen because someone criticizes them for taking the wrong steps. Extremist groups like Sikh for Justice are responsible for these attacks and are taking things in the wrong direction,” the source said.

Also, MP Arya’s remarks show the Trudeau government is not acting on past cases, the source said.
