A Russian drone struck a high-rise apartment building in the Ukrainian capital Kiev on Friday evening, sparking a fire on the top floors and killing one person and injuring five, officials said.
Sergei Popko, head of the capital’s military administration, said more than 100 residents had been evacuated from the skyscraper in the Solomyansky district, just west of the city center.
Air defense units were in action during the hour-long airstrike and two hours later a new alert was issued in the city for approaching drones.
“Apartments from the 17th to the 21st floor have been damaged in the apartment building in the Solomyanski district,” Popko wrote on the Telegram messaging app. “Apartments on the 20th floor were on fire.”
Mayor Vitali Klitschko said a teenage girl had died. One of the five injured was hospitalized, and a first aid tent was set up at the scene.
Emergency services said the fire was under control. Photos and videos posted on their site show firefighters using long hoists to battle the blaze.
Popko also said that fragments of a drone fell in the open in the central Shevchenko district. No casualties were reported.
