External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and his Iranian counterpart Seyed Abbas Araghchi met briefly on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and his Iranian counterpart Seyed Abbas Araghchi met briefly on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. Jaishankar shared a photo of himself and Iran’s foreign minister at the UN General Assembly in New York and said the two had met ahead of a BRICS meeting.

“With Iran’s foreign minister @araghchi ahead of the BRICS meeting,” Jaishankar said in the post.

The meeting comes amid conflicts in West Asia, where Israel is embroiled in conflicts with Iran-backed Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon, as well as Yemen’s Houthis.

The meeting of the two ministers also comes against the backdrop of comments made by Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei regarding the Muslim community in India.

Earlier this month, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei spoke of the “suffering” of Muslims in Gaza and Myanmar in a message calling for global Muslim unity. On the occasion of the Prophet Muhammad’s birth anniversary, he also mentioned India, but did not specify why he mentioned the country’s Muslim minority in his statement published on X.

The Foreign Office strongly condemned the comments he made and urged countries to “look at their own records” before commenting on others.

In a strongly worded statement, the MEA dismissed his remarks about the “suffering” of Muslims in India, describing them as a lack of understanding of the situation in the country. “We strongly condemn the comments made regarding minorities in India by the Supreme Leader of Iran. They are misinformed and unacceptable,” said an MEA statement issued by official spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal.
