Commerce and Trade Minister Piyush Goyal mentioned he held “fruitful” discussions with U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and U.S. Ambassador to India Sergio Gor on Thursday (February 26, 2026).

The assembly comes days after negotiators on either side determined to postpone the Indian staff’s go to to Washington for a gathering that was scheduled from February 23-25 to finalise the interim settlement on commerce between the 2 nations.

The choice adopted the U.S. Supreme Courtroom hanging down U.S. President Donald Trump’s use of explicit laws to implement tariffs on companion nations, together with on India.

“Hosted US Secretary of Commerce @HowardLutnick & @USAmbIndia Sergio Gor. Engaged in very fruitful discussions to increase our commerce and financial partnership,” Mr. Goyal posted on X.

Mr. Gor, too, took to X to say that he had a “extremely productive lunch” with ⁦Mr. Lutnick and Mr. Goyal, and that there have been “so many areas of cooperation” for India and the U.S.

No deal to this point

The 2 nations have to this point solely signed and introduced a joint assertion saying that they’ve “reached a framework for an Interim Settlement” relating to reciprocal and mutually useful commerce. That settlement was purported to be signed in mid-March and applied by early April, in keeping with Mr. Goyal.

In response to the Supreme Courtroom resolution, the Indian authorities issued a press release saying it has “famous” the judgment and that the federal government was “learning all these developments for his or her implications”. It didn’t, nonetheless, point out that it was re-thinking the interim settlement.

U.S. in business-as-usual mode

Following the U.S. Supreme Courtroom’s resolution, Mr. Lutnick had instructed an American information channel that, during the last 12 months, he has been assuring U.S. commerce companions that “we had been going to have tariffs” whatever the final result of the Supreme Courtroom case.

“That’s why they signed these offers, even whereas the litigation was pending,” he mentioned. “So, we’re having energetic conversations with them. We would like them to grasp that these offers are going to be good offers. We anticipate to face by them. We anticipate our companions to face by them. And I haven’t heard anybody but come to me and say, the deal’s off.”
