Have an IndiGo Flight Booked? Here’s How to Avoid Chaos and Check Flight Status & Refund Options From Home

IndiGo Flight Chaos: How to Check Flight Status, Refund Rules, and Passenger Rights From Home

India’s air travel network continues to face major disruptions for the fourth straight day as IndiGo, the country’s largest airline, has cancelled nearly 500 flights, including all departures from New Delhi. The widespread cancellations have led to long queues, stranded passengers, and scenes of frustration at multiple airports.

The airline acknowledged the crisis, stating:

“We are facing a serious operational challenge. While this may not be resolved overnight, we will do everything possible to support passengers.”

With thousands of travellers missing interviews, weddings, important events and even last rites, here’s what you should do if you already have an IndiGo ticket booked.

    1. Avoid airports — check your IndiGo flight status from home

Airport terminals across major cities are extremely crowded. Reaching airline staff for assistance has become difficult, and queues for cancellations and refunds are stretching for hours.

It’s best to stay home and check your flight status online.

✔ How to check your IndiGo flight status

    • Visit IndiGo’s official website or mobile app
    • Call the airline’s customer service centre
    • Track delays, cancellations, or rescheduling
    • See whether cancellation charges are being waived

IndiGo has confirmed full refunds for passengers who wish to cancel due to the ongoing disruption. If your travel is not urgent, cancelling or rescheduling from home may be the safest choice.

The Ministry of Civil Aviation’s Passenger Charter also outlines rights and protections for travellers during cancellations or delays, ensuring passengers are not left without assistance.

IndiGo has said flight operations may stabilise by Saturday, but travellers should remain cautious and monitor updates closely.

    2. Understanding ticket refund rules under Indian aviation guidelines

India’s civil aviation regulations clearly define what passengers are entitled to in the event of flight cancellations.

    If your flight is cancelled:

    • If the airline informs you at least 2 weeks before travel, you must be offered:
      • an alternate flight or
      • a full refund
    • If cancellation is announced between 2 weeks and 24 hours before travel, you must receive:
      • an alternate flight or
      • a refund
    • If the airline does not inform you, or you miss a connecting flight on the same ticket:
      • You must be provided an alternate flight without additional charges.

    ✔ Compensation passengers can claim:

    • Full refund + ₹5,000 or one-way basic fare (whichever is lower) for flights up to 1 hour
    • Full refund + ₹7,500 or one-way basic fare for flights between 1–2 hours
    • Full refund + ₹10,000 or one-way basic fare for flights above 2 hours

✔ Additional support airlines must provide:

    • Meals and refreshments for delays
    • Hotel accommodation and transfers, if required

Given recent developments, IndiGo has struggled to meet several of these requirements, raising concerns about passenger handling standards.

    3. What to do during flight delays

    Under DGCA rules:

    • Airlines must offer meals for delays up to 6 hours
    • If a delay exceeds 24 hours, passengers must be provided hotel accommodation
    • For flights scheduled between 8 PM and 3 AM, hotels must be offered if the delay is 6 hours or more

    4. Denied boarding rules (not applicable currently)

DGCA also has compensation rules for passengers denied boarding.
However, since IndiGo has cancelled most flights outright, denied boarding scenarios are largely irrelevant in this situation.

    5. Situations where airlines are exempt from paying compensation

Airlines are not required to compensate passengers when delays or cancellations occur due to:

    • Air Traffic Control restrictions
    • Security-related issues
    • Weather or natural disasters
    • Political events or emergencies

Determining where the current IndiGo crisis fits within these categories will be evaluated in due course.

    What happens next?

With IndiGo operating roughly 65% of India’s domestic market and carrying over 300,000 passengers daily, the ongoing disruption has grounded a massive portion of the country’s travellers.

This event is expected to spark a broader discussion on:

    • airline operational preparedness
    • regulatory oversight
    • passenger protection mechanisms

A review by aviation authorities, including DGCA, is likely.
