Powerful 7.0 Earthquake Hits Alaska–Canada Border; Tremors Felt in Yakutat and Juneau, No Tsunami Threat

A powerful magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck near the Alaska–Canada border on Saturday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The tremors were felt across parts of southeast Alaska, including Yakutat and Juneau, prompting quick assessments from local and national agencies.

    Earthquake Details

The earthquake occurred at 11:41 a.m. local time at an estimated depth of 10 km.
USGS reported that the epicentre was located about 90 km north of Yakutat, a region known for seismic activity along the Pacific tectonic boundaries.

As of now, no injuries or damage have been reported by local authorities.

No Tsunami Threat, Confirms Pacific Tsunami Warning Center

Shortly after the quake, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued an update confirming that the event did not pose a tsunami threat.

The National Weather Service (NWS) office in Eureka also reassured coastal communities:

“A preliminary magnitude 7.0 earthquake has occurred approximately 230 miles NW of Juneau, Alaska, around 12:42 PST today. There is NO TSUNAMI DANGER for the U.S. West Coast.”

Officials continue to monitor the situation, but all early assessments indicate no risk of tsunami formation.

    Tremors Felt Across Southeast Alaska

Residents in Yakutat and Juneau reported noticeable shaking, though early reports suggest that the impact remained mild to moderate in populated areas. Authorities advise residents to stay alert for aftershocks, which are common following major seismic events.

Emergency services in the region remain on standby as a precaution, though no disruptions to essential infrastructure have been reported so far.

    Officials Monitoring for Aftershocks

Geologists note that additional tremors are possible in the coming hours or days. USGS and regional agencies continue to track seismic activity to keep communities informed.
