Union Home Minister Amit Shah has agreed to meet the parents of the woman junior doctor of Kolkata’s RG Kar Government Medical College and Hospital who was raped and then murdered on the hospital premises in August this year.
Sources said that after the victim’s father approached the Union home minister, he expressed his desire to meet the parents.
“The Home Minister was scheduled to arrive in Kolkata today only amid the upcoming by-polls for six assembly constituencies. However, his tour was postponed, otherwise a meeting could only be arranged today. Now there is an opportunity for the home minister to arrive. Then his meeting with the parents of the victim can be arranged,” said a BJP state committee member in West Bengal.
In the letter to the Home Secretary, the victim’s father said that after the horrific unforeseen accident that happened to their daughter, they were under immense mental pressure and felt helpless.
The victim’s father claimed he wanted to meet the Union home minister “to discuss a few things regarding the situation” and seek his guidance and help.
Incidentally, his meeting request comes just a day after a group of junior doctors withdrew their speed-to-death agitation in support of their demands following the rape-murder tragedy.
The junior doctors called off their hunger strike following the request of the victim’s parents.
The victim’s body was recovered from the seminar hall of RG Kar on the morning of August 9 this year. The Kolkata Police started the initial investigation and arrested the civic volunteer Sanjay Roy.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) later took over the investigation following a court order. CBI investigators later arrested former and controversial director of RG Kar Sandip Ghosh and former SHO of Tala police station Abhijit Mondal on charges of misleading the investigation and tampering with evidence.
However, in the first chargesheet filed by the CBI in a special court in Kolkata earlier this month, Sanjay Roy was identified as the “sole prime accused” in the rape-murder crime.
