Sania Mirza’s final women’s doubles Grand Slam match ended in defeat as she lost 4-6 6-4 2-6 in the second round of the Australian Open on Sunday. Mirza and her Kazakh partner Anna Danielina, seeded eighth, lost to Belgium’s Allison van Utvanck and Ukraine’s Anhilina Kalinina in a match that lasted more than two hours.

The Indian men’s doubles pair of N Sriram Balaji and Jeon Nedonchizian were also knocked out in the second round by the French pair of Jeremy Chardy and Fabrice Martin.

Balaji and Nidanchizian, who came into the tournament as an alternate team, lost 4-6 4-6, ending India’s challenge in the men’s doubles competition. Down a set and trailing 0-3 in the second, Mirza and Danielina fought back to win three straight games.

They got a crucial break in the seventh game when Kalinina and Van Van Utwank hit a forehand wide, sending the match to a decider. However, the Indo-Pirates could not carry on the winning momentum in the third set as they were broken three times.

Mirza, however, is still alive in the mixed doubles draw with veteran Rohan Bopanna. The duo beat locals Jimmy Fourliss and Luke Saville 7-5 6-3 in their opening round on Saturday.
