Sania Mirza’s final women’s doubles Grand Slam match ended in defeat as she lost 4-6 6-4 2-6 in the second round of the Australian Open on Sunday. Mirza and her Kazakh partner Anna Danielina, seeded eighth, lost to Belgium’s Allison van Utvanck and Ukraine’s Anhilina Kalinina in a match that lasted more than two hours.

The Indian men’s doubles pair of N Sriram Balaji and Jeon Nedonchizian were also knocked out in the second round by the French pair of Jeremy Chardy and Fabrice Martin.

Balaji and Nidanchizian, who came into the tournament as an alternate team, lost 4-6 4-6, ending India’s challenge in the men’s doubles competition. Down a set and trailing 0-3 in the second, Mirza and Danielina fought back to win three straight games.
