Bihar imposes dress code for staff, teachers, bans casual attire, social media activities to promote professionalism – Times of India

Five teachers, three women in colorful saris and two men in formal wear, stand together in the school yard. They smile warmly, embodying the spirit of education.

PATNA: The Bihar state education department has introduced strict guidelines aimed at increasing professionalism in schools. A recent notice bans casual wear, such as jeans and T-shirts, for all staff and employees. The order issued by the Director (Administration) of the Department of Education, Subodh Kumar Chaudharyemphasizes the importance of maintaining office decorum.
“It has been observed that officials and employees of the department are coming to offices wearing attire that is against the office culture. The wearing of casual clothes in the office by officials or other employees is against the work culture. Therefore, all officials and employees should come to their offices in formal dresses only. No casual dresses, especially jeans and T-shirts, are allowed in the department offices with immediate effect,” the notification said.
In addition to the dress code, the notice addresses concerns about inappropriate activities on school premises. Activities such as dancing, DJing, disco and other low-level entertainment are prohibited, especially those promoted through social media platforms. The notice emphasizes that such behavior negatively affects the educational environment, which is considered unacceptable. Only disciplined and appropriate programs such as dances and music on special occasions consistent with the academic calendar are permitted.
Chaudhary explained that these measures are aimed at maintaining professionalism in the education sector. He warned that employees found violating the dress code could be subject to appropriate disciplinary action. The move echoes a similar directive issued earlier by Saran District Judge reinforcing the commitment to a formal work environment in public educational institutions.
