The rape and homicide of the trainee physician was investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the prime suspect, Sanjay Roy, was convicted for the rape and homicide in January 2025. Roy has been sentenced to life in jail.

Trinamool Congress state basic secretary Kunal Ghosh questioned Debnath’s resolution to contest on a BJP ticket.
