The Border Security Force foiled an attempt by four Bangladeshis to enter India illegally, arresting them at a border post in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district, an official statement said on Wednesday. The Bangladeshis were said to have intended to travel to Chennai to find work.

BSF personnel of 73 Battalion of South Bengal Frontier Division, posted at Bamanabad Border Outpost, noticed suspicious movements near the International Border at around 3:35 pm on Tuesday (October 15, 2024).

They spotted five people trying to cross from Bangladesh into Indian territory, four of whom were Bangladeshi nationals carrying fake Aadhaar cards. The fifth person was an Indian who allegedly facilitated their movement across the border.

After raising the alarm, the group of five tried to make their way into Indian territory, scattering and trying to hide in the tall grass. Soon after the rapid response teams were deployed, all the five were arrested and handed over to the Raninagar police station for further legal action.

“Heading to Chennai”

During further interrogation at the Bamanabad outpost, the Indian robber admitted that he had arrived at the international border on Tuesday, October 15, to help Bangladeshi nationals cross into Indian territory. The four illegal immigrants, who are residents of the Godagari sub-district of Rajshahi in Bangladesh, were said to have planned to travel to Chennai to work as laborers and had promised to pay the Indian smuggler Rs 4,000 per person after successfully entering the India.

The four also claimed that their fake Indian identity documents were obtained through a Godagari-based Bangladeshi tout for 1,000 Bangladeshi taka per head.

In a similar incident two weeks ago, two Bangladeshi nationals were arrested by the BSF at Kakmarichar border post on October 2 for illegally entering Indian territory. A few hours later, two Indians were arrested by Bangladesh Border Guards at the same post on the other side of the international border.
