EU warns of downward spiral after Trump threatens tariffs over Greenland

European Union leaders on Saturday ​(January 17, 2026) warned of a “harmful downward spiral” ‌over U.S. President Donald Trump’s ​vow to implement rising tariffs on European allies till the U.S. is allowed to purchase Greenland.

“Tariffs would undermine transatlantic relations and threat a harmful downward spiral. ​Europe will stay united, coordinated, and ⁠dedicated to upholding its sovereignty,” European Fee President Ursula von der Leyen and EU Council ​President Antonio ⁠Costa stated in posts on X.

The bloc’s high diplomat Kaja Kallas stated tariffs would damage prosperity ‌on either side of ‌the Atlantic, whereas distracting the EU from its “core process” of ‍ending Russia’s conflict in Ukraine.

“China and Russia should be having ‍a discipline day. They’re those who profit from divisions amongst allies,” Ms. Kallas stated on X.

“Tariffs threat making Europe and america poorer and undermine our shared prosperity. If Greenland’s safety ⁠is in danger, we will deal with this inside NATO,” she added.

Ambassadors from ​the European Union’s 27 international locations ⁠will convene on Sunday (January 18, 2026) for an emergency assembly to debate their response to the tariff risk.

Mr. Trump stated Saturday (January 17, 2026) that he would cost a ten% import tax beginning in February on items from eight European nations due to their opposition to American management of Greenland, establishing a probably harmful check of U.S. partnerships in Europe.

Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands and Finland would face the tariff, Mr. Trump stated in a social media put up. The speed would climb to 25% on June 1 if no deal was in place for “the Full and Complete buy of Greenland” by america, he added.
