European Union leaders on Saturday (January 17, 2026) warned of a “harmful downward spiral” over U.S. President Donald Trump’s vow to implement rising tariffs on European allies till the U.S. is allowed to purchase Greenland.
“Tariffs would undermine transatlantic relations and threat a harmful downward spiral. Europe will stay united, coordinated, and dedicated to upholding its sovereignty,” European Fee President Ursula von der Leyen and EU Council President Antonio Costa stated in posts on X.
The bloc’s high diplomat Kaja Kallas stated tariffs would damage prosperity on either side of the Atlantic, whereas distracting the EU from its “core process” of ending Russia’s conflict in Ukraine.
“China and Russia should be having a discipline day. They’re those who profit from divisions amongst allies,” Ms. Kallas stated on X.
“Tariffs threat making Europe and america poorer and undermine our shared prosperity. If Greenland’s safety is in danger, we will deal with this inside NATO,” she added.
Ambassadors from the European Union’s 27 international locations will convene on Sunday (January 18, 2026) for an emergency assembly to debate their response to the tariff risk.
