Germany arrests man with suspected ISIS links for plotting attack on Israeli embassy

German authorities have arrested a man with suspected links to the Islamic State terror group who is believed to have planned an attack on the Israeli embassy in Berlin.

The man was detained on Saturday (local time) in Bernau, a town just outside Berlin. German news agency dpa reported that the suspect is expected to appear before an investigating judge at the country’s highest court, the Karlsruhe Federal Court, on Sunday.

A spokesman for the Israeli embassy in Berlin confirmed to dpa that there was a plan to attack the diplomatic mission. Israeli Ambassador Ron Prosor thanked the German security authorities “for ensuring the security of our embassy”, DPA reported.

News of the case first came from the Bild newspaper, which reported that a heavily armed elite police unit had raided the suspect’s apartment in Bernau and that police had also searched an apartment in the West German city of St. Augustin in connection with the case.

Bild reported that German authorities acted after receiving a tip from an unspecified foreign intelligence agency.
