Former United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has stated this Joe Biden made the right decision to retire in the upcoming US presidential election after a poor performance in a debate against Donald Trump. Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, Clinton expressed that Biden’s inability to recover from the debate meant he was vindicated in his choice.
“Once that debate happened, he couldn’t recover and he did the right thing,” Clinton said. She also pointed out that Democrats have struggled to effectively communicate their efforts to address the economic woes of Trump supporters. Clinton is familiar with this after being unexpectedly defeated by Trump in the 2016 election, a fitting lesson as Trump is now running against the Democratic nominee Kamala Harris in a tight race.
Clinton acknowledged that the future of democracy in the United States depends on this election, calling on Harris to “defeat Donald Trump to end the fever he has created in our political system,” according to BBC News.
Clinton noted the stark differences in the agendas presented by the two candidates, arguing that the consequences of the election extend far beyond US borders, touching on issues such as support for Ukraine and stability in the Middle East. She expressed concern about Trump’s previous comments about potentially cutting US aid to Ukraine, saying: “This election will have repercussions far beyond the US.”
In the interview, Clinton blasted Trump’s pledge to begin mass deportations of illegal immigrants, citing comments made by his Vice President-elect, JD Vance. “He will have a military presence [in US cities] to achieve his goals,” she said.
Clinton acknowledged that Trump’s support stems from a variety of factors, including feeling “neglected” and concerns about an economy that doesn’t seem to be working for everyone. “I think our problem is, frankly, we’re not the most effective messengers,” she said.
As the Nov. 5 election nears, polls show Trump is now more trusted on the crucial issue of the economy, with only narrow margins separating the candidates in key battleground states.
