I Have Indian Heritage: Rachin Ravindra Explains How He Passed Spin Test In Bengaluru

New Zealand cricketer Rachin Ravindra credited his Indian heritage and extensive experience of playing in Indian conditions for his success against India’s spin attack in winning the Bengaluru Test. Ravindra put in a memorable performance, scoring first innings centuries and an unbeaten 39 during New Zealand’s tense chase, helping the Kiwis to their first Test win on Indian soil since 1988.

Speaking exclusively to JioCinema after being named Man of the Match, Ravindra elaborated on his approach to countering India’s formidable spin attack. “I don’t necessarily play in the traditional style of the Westerners who come here. I have Indian heritage and have played a lot of cricket in India which has helped me develop these game plans,” he explained. Ravindra’s Indian roots have clearly shaped his ability to handle spin on the subcontinent’s pitches, an area where many visiting players often struggle.

“I’m not a massive sweeper or a reverse sweeper, so I stick to my strengths,” he continued. “I was able to play against the spin and with fewer fielders in that side, it helped me to accumulate runs.” His calm and controlled batting, combined with a deep understanding of Indian conditions, contributed to New Zealand’s success on a spin-friendly pitch in Bengaluru.

Born in Wellington to Indian parents from Bengaluru, Ravindra has always maintained a strong connection to his heritage. Reflecting on his connections with the city, he said, “Bengaluru is always special to me, not just for cricket but off the field as well. It’s a great city and I feel welcomed by the fans and the people here. I have family connections so it makes it even more special as I don’t get to see them often so playing in front of them is always an amazing feeling.”

The 23-year-old’s brilliant knock of 134 in the first innings stood out as a career-defining moment. Rachin’s calm batting showed maturity beyond his years and his ability to switch gears as his innings progressed – sending the same deliveries he initially drove for the stands boundaries – was key to building New Zealand’s commanding 402.

“This win means a lot to us. After the loss to Sri Lanka, we knew we had not played our best cricket. But we went into this match with a clear mindset, focused on improvement,” said Ravindra. “Conditions suited us on Day 2 after Day 1 was changed and India’s bunting cheaply gave us the edge. It was important to capitalize on that advantage.”

Ravindra praised his teammates, especially openers Will Young and Devon Conway, for withstanding India’s world-class bowling attack and setting the stage for victory. “Credit to Youngy and Dev for getting through this tough time. Test cricket is all about riding the ebb and flow and the guys coming through that spell has been invaluable to us.”
