Meta will use its digital platforms to spread the message to millions of consumers in the country and warn them about such scams

The Indian government is teaming up with Meta to combat the country’s growing online scam problem with a new campaign called ‘Scam se Bacho’ that will promote digital among Indians.

This initiative by Meta is being launched in collaboration with key ministries, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) and India’s Cyber Crime Coordination Center (I4C).

The PIB note said the campaign is aimed at combating the growing menace of fraud and cyber fraud, in line with the government’s commitment to tackle rising cases of online fraud and improve cyber security.

At the event this week, the I&B secretary highlighted that India, with over 900 million internet users, has seen extraordinary digital growth under the Digital India initiative, becoming a global leader in UPI transactions.

Having said that, the growth has also made it an easy and popular target for fraudsters with 1.1 million cases of cyber fraud reported in 2023 and more expected this year. “By leveraging Meta’s global expertise, the campaign will empower every Indian to protect themselves from cyber threats by ensuring that our digital progress is coupled with robust digital security,” he added.

The rise of UPI payments and QR code payments has catapulted these scams, mainly because people are not aware of how the system works. We have gradually seen banks and other entities share caution while making pop-up payments and more efforts are needed to thwart such cases in the coming years.
