Team India has suffered a major blow as midfielder Hardik Singh has been ruled out of the remaining matches of the ongoing Hockey World Cup 2023 in Odisha. He has been replaced by Rajkumar Pal.

Hardik suffered a hamstring injury during the Poole d match against England which ended in a 0-0 draw. Hardik limped off the field with just three minutes remaining in the match. Later in the press conference, head coach Graham Reid admitted that it was not as serious as initially suspected.

However, Hardik was rested for the match against Wales after his MRI scan as the management did not want to aggravate the injury.

Although India beat Wales by a convincing 4-2 margin, two-goal scorer Akash Deep Singh admitted that the team missed Hardik’s services.

“When you have 18 players to play for a team, and for some reason if you’re one player short, the rest of the players will play more time and get tired. So of course we missed his absence. Commenting on the decision on Hardik, coach Reid said: “Overnight we had to make a difficult decision to replace Hardik Singh in the Indian squad for Sunday’s match against New Zealand and the subsequent World Cup matches. “

“While the injury was not as severe as the initial incident suggested, time was not on our side and following our ongoing full rehabilitation process and functional and on-field assessment, it was decided today that we will replace Hardik with Rajkumar. While it is extremely disappointing for Hardik personally, given how well he played in our first two matches, we are confident of Rajkumar’s chances of joining the group for the rest of the World Cup matches. India finished second in Pool D and now have to beat New Zealand in a crossover tie to advance to the quarterfinals.
