IndiGo Flight Cancellations LIVE Updates: 650 Flights Cancelled Today; Airline Says Operations Will Stabilise by December 10
IndiGo Flight Cancellations LIVE: 650 Flights Scrapped Today; Operations to Stabilise by Dec 10
India’s largest airline, IndiGo, continued to face severe disruption for the sixth consecutive day, cancelling 650 flights on Sunday as part of an ongoing operational crisis. The airline, which normally operates around 2,300 daily flights, confirmed that it will operate approximately 1,650 flights today and expects full network stability by December 10.
Mass cancellations and delays have triggered large crowds and frustration at major airports including Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Chennai, with thousands of passengers stranded across the country.
Major Disruptions Across Airports
According to airport and aviation sources:
- 115 flights cancelled at Hyderabad
- 112 flights cancelled at Mumbai
- 109 cancelled in Delhi
- 38 in Chennai
- 11 in Amritsar
Since Tuesday, IndiGo has cancelled over 2,000 flights, marking one of the biggest aviation disruptions India has seen in recent years.
DGCA Issues Notice to IndiGo CEO
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has issued a show-cause notice to IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers, holding him responsible for:
- lapses in operational planning
- insufficient oversight
- gaps in resource management
The regulator has demanded an explanation within 24 hours on why action should not be taken for these violations.
Government Steps In: Refunds, Fare Caps, and Compensation
Amid nationwide chaos, the civil aviation ministry has:
- Directed IndiGo to clear all pending refunds by 8 PM on December 7 (Sunday)
- Ordered the airline to return separated baggage within 48 hours
- Imposed temporary fare caps after ticket prices surged due to limited flight availability
These fare limits will remain in force until the situation normalises.
Why Is This Crisis Happening?
The disruptions stem from IndiGo’s transition to the second phase of new flight duty and rest norms for pilots, which created scheduling imbalances. The airline has now received temporary relief, allowing pilots to perform up to six landings in a night to stabilise operations.
IndiGo said it operated 1,500 flights on Saturday and has already restored over 95% of network connectivity, while also issuing repeated apologies to affected passengers.
