Israel escalates Beirut bombing, kills 73 in Gaza strike, 70 shells pass from Lebanon in minutes: Highlights – Times of India

Tension between Israel and Hezbollah reached new heights on Sunday as Israeli military targeted Hezbollah strongholds in Beirut. The Israeli Air Force (IAF) attacked a Hezbollah command center and an underground weapons facility located in the Lebanese capital.
It follows increased military activity along Israel’s northern borders as fighting intensifies with Iran-backed Hezbollah forces.
The Israeli military’s official statement emphasized the significance of the intelligence-based strike that hit Hezbollah’s intelligence headquarters. In addition to the operation in Beirut, the Israeli military reported the killing of three Hezbollah fighters in southern Lebanon.
The Israeli army struck a Hezbollah “command center”.
The Israeli military said it struck a Hezbollah command center and an underground weapons facility in the Lebanese capital Beirut on Sunday.
“Earlier this morning (Sunday), the IAF (Israeli Air Force) carried out an intelligence-based strike on a Hezbollah intelligence headquarters command center and an underground weapons workshop in Beirut,” the Israeli military said in a statement.
Secret US documents leaked
The US government is investigating the unauthorized release of classified documents about Israel’s military strategies. These top-secret files, attributed to the US Geospatial Intelligence Agency and the US National Security Agency, outline Israel’s plans to respond to an Iranian missile attack on October 1.
The leak, first reported by CNN and Axios, raised security concerns because the documents were distributed across the “Five Eyes” intelligence network, which includes the US, Britain, Canada, New Zealand and Australia.
Although the leak revealed that Israel was still mobilizing its military assets for a possible strike against Iran, US officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the documents appeared to be legitimate.
Over 70 killed in Israeli airstrike on Gaza
Meanwhile, Israel continues its offensive in Gaza, with the northern regions facing a severe humanitarian crisis after weeks of blockades. In Beit Lahiya, northern Gaza, an Israeli attack left at least 73 Palestinians dead, according to local sources.
However, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) disputed this figure, calling the reported casualties “exaggerated”. The death toll is expected to rise as rescue teams try to clear the debris and rescue those buried under the rubble.
Netanyahu accuses Hezbollah of attempted murder
The conflict also took a personal turn for the Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahuwho on Saturday accused Hezbollah of trying to kill him with a drone. The drone was reportedly aimed at his family home in Caesarea, but no one was injured. Netanyahu, who was away at the time, vowed retribution, calling the attack a “serious mistake” by Hezbollah and warning that “anyone who tries to harm the citizens of Israel will pay a heavy price.”
The Israeli prime minister’s statement comes amid ongoing clashes between Israeli troops and Hezbollah forces in southern Lebanon. This confrontation follows the targeted killings of several key figures in the Israeli military, including Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and Yahya Sinwar of Hamas.
Sinwar’s escape through a tunnel in video
Israel released footage of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar fleeing a tunnel complex ahead of the deadly October 7 Hamas attack. The footage, which shows Sinwar and his family transporting belongings in the tunnel under his home in Khan Younis, sheds light on the extensive underground infrastructure used by Hamas leaders.
Sinwar’s death in southern Gaza marks a significant development in Israel’s ongoing conflict. However, with tensions escalating on multiple fronts, the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah threatens to spread further, plunging the region into a deeper state of unrest.
