London suffers from ‘high’ air pollution with city mayor Sadiq Khan Alert issued for citizens. He has asked Londoners to be cautious in the next few days and avoid unnecessary car travel, PTI reported.

According to the AQI website, London had an air quality index of 58 and was considered moderate.

According to a BBC report, air pollution has been experienced in London since Saturday due to cold and fog.

The Mayor’s office also plans to display pollution alert messages on the Transport for London (TfL) network. Schools and Boroughs will also be notified.

Khan emphasized the need to expand London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) to reduce toxic air pollution in the city.

The ULEZ, which targets the most polluting vehicles with a daily surcharge, will be rolled out across the city from August this year as part of the city’s measures to reduce air pollution.

Under the scheme, drivers are charged £12.50 to enter the area within London’s North and South Circular Roads.

According to Defra figures, in the UK, AQI levels between 0-3 are low, 4-6 moderate, 7-9 high and above 10 very high.

The AQI level in London is 1/3 that of Delhi, which is considered unhealthy for living.

According to the AQI website, the AQI level in Jahangirpuri at 10 pm was 194, and was considered ‘unhealthy’. Other areas considered unhealthy include Narila (170), Bawana (174), Punjabi Bagh (164) and others.
