The case traces again to June 2020, through the COVID-19 lockdown when Jayaraj and his son Bennix, who ran a cell store in Sathankulam in Thoothukudi district, have been taken into custody for allegedly conserving their store open past permitted hours.
What started as a minor lockdown violation escalated into probably the most broadly reported custodial dying circumstances in India.
In response to the prosecution, tensions started on June 18, 2020, when police personnel allegedly threatened people gathered close to Jayaraj’s store throughout lockdown enforcement. Witnesses later said that Jayaraj had brazenly criticised police behaviour, questioning their high-handedness in coping with the general public.
The subsequent day, police personnel allegedly looked for and recognized Jayaraj, earlier than forcibly taking him into custody. Witnesses deposed that officers have been actively asking locals to establish the one that had spoken in opposition to the police the day before today.
The prosecution case additional alleged that each Jayaraj and Bennix have been subjected to brutal assault contained in the Sathankulam police station, resulting in their deaths.
