A man died after he was allegedly beaten up by two youths for harassing his 15-year-old daughter in West Bengal’s Howrah, police said on Tuesday.
The alleged incident took place on Sunday night.
Police say they have arrested one of the two accused and are on the lookout for the other, who is absconding.
“We have arrested an accused based on a complaint filed by the victim’s family. He has been charged under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act and other provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). was,” said a senior police officer.
The alleged incident took place when the class 10 girl was returning home from tuition at 8:30 pm on Sunday when two youths stopped and harassed her.
According to the police, he came home and narrated the incident to his family and later his father came out to confront the accused youths.
“This led to a scuffle between the man and two youths and he returned home,” said a police officer investigating the case.
“On Monday night, he complained of illness and was first taken to a rural hospital from where doctors referred him to Alberia Sub-Divisional Hospital. He died on Tuesday morning,” the officer added.
“His body has been sent for post-mortem and we will be able to ascertain the cause of death only after the post-mortem report,” the officer said.
Meanwhile, the wife of the arrested accused denied the harassment incident and alleged that her husband was being framed.
According to the accused’s wife, her husband and the victim were intoxicated when the fight took place on Sunday night, police said.
