Meta had several rounds of layoffs to adjust its staff after hiring aggressively during the pandemic.
Meta says it has laid off some employees, including WhatsApp and Instagram employees, to reallocate resources to its “strategic goals.”
A Meta spokesperson confirmed in a statement that some teams are making changes to align with their long-term location goals and strategy. Specific details on the number of employees affected were not released.
“This includes moving some teams to different locations and moving some employees to different roles,” Metta said in a statement. “In situations like this, where a role is eliminated, we work hard to find other opportunities for affected employees.” The Verge, which first reported the layoffs, said cuts were made to teams that include messaging service WhatsApp and Instagram and Meta’s virtual reality technology division Reality Labs.
Among those affected was Jane Manchun Wong, a software engineer known for discovering unreleased features in popular social media apps before joining Meta in 2023.

“I’m still trying to process this, but I’ve been informed that my role on Meta has been affected,” Wong wrote in a public thread post.
