Internships are increasingly becoming the preferred way of recruiting candidates for many corporations, and most students and corporations prefer a 4 to 6-month (one semester) internship as the appropriate time to study, a report said.
According to a report by AI-based recruitment automation firm HirePro, students (53 percent), colleges (40 percent) and corporations (57 percent) prefer internships that last 4-6 months (one semester) because it is neither one, neither too long nor too short.
Students see internships as an opportunity to learn the real nuances of what they learn in classrooms while being mentored by an experienced expert, the report said.
For corporations, this has been found to be a great way to closely observe a candidate and see how quickly they can learn and start performing tasks. However, colleges approve 10-12 month internships for students to be industry ready, he adds.
“Students now prefer to engage with companies well before the final placement cycle, with competitions and hackathons serving as the initial touch point and internships representing the next step,” said HirePro COO Pasupathi.
This HirePro report is based on the opinions of over 20,000 students, over 350 educational institutions and over 200 corporate entities, and additional perspectives from over 100 campus recruiting experts.
Meanwhile, the report found that students prioritize flexibility and fair pay in internships, with 68 percent of students willing to move anywhere for the right opportunity.
The expected monthly stipend for full-time internships ranges from Rs 15,000 to Rs 40,000, the report added.
It also revealed that there is a significant disparity between students, corporations and academia in terms of remote and flexible internship models.
As demand for remote and flexible work continues to grow, the report highlights that 79 percent of students are willing to accept remote internships, while 71 percent of corporations disagree, citing concerns about effective supervision and hands-on training.
Over 67 percent of colleges support remote internship models, recognizing the new digital environment, the report added.
