Mumbai schools, colleges close tomorrow amid IMD warning of heavy rain, BMC issues notice – Times of India

BMC trouble notice: Mumbai schools closed tomorrow

Schools in Mumbai Closed on September 26: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued an emergency notification declaring a holiday for all schools and colleges in Mumbai on Thursday, September 26, 2024 as a precautionary measure due to hard time conditions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has put the city on red alert until 8:30 a.m. tomorrow, citing public safety concerns.
Keeping the warning in mind, the BMC has advised residents to avoid leaving their homes unless absolutely necessary. The announcement follows the IMD’s forecast of severe thunderstorms, lightning and heavy rainfall in Mumbai and nearby regions, including Palghar and Satara, with gusty winds expected to reach speeds of 40-50 kmph. These conditions are likely to continue into the evening, creating risks in isolated areas.
The bad weather has already caused significant disruption, especially at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, where flight operations have been affected. In a recent incident, an Indigo flight was diverted to Ahmedabad due to wind shear while attempting to land.
Mumbai’s suburban rail system also faces challenges. Heavy rainfall caused waterlogging of railway tracks in areas like Kurla, Bhandup and Vikhroli, leading to delays of up to an hour on the Central Railway.
In light of these developments, the BMC has reiterated its appeal to residents, advising them to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary, as shared through their official social media channels.
