A 37-year-old man who set himself on fire in front of Nepal’s parliament a day ago has succumbed to his injuries at the hospital where he was being treated, doctors confirmed Wednesday.

Identified as Prem Prasad Acharya, the businessman from Alllam district doused himself with diesel and set himself on fire as the motorcade of the country’s newly elected Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal was leaving Parliament on Tuesday afternoon.

“He succumbed to his burn injuries. He had 80 percent burns,” hospital Dr. Kiran Nakarmi confirmed to ANI over phone.

In a video circulating on social media in Nepal, it can be seen that the man tried to put out the fire after setting himself on fire. After the fire was brought under control, the man was taken to Skinburn Hospital in Kirtipur.

Prem Prasad Acharya had posted on his social media accounts about the financial and mental breakdown he had been facing for years. The lengthy post in which she spoke about her intention to end her life has been widely shared on social media.

The businessman said that the conditions were always unfavorable for him, which forced him to take extreme measures. He also told how he had tried several times before but failed. The government did not react to the incident.

The government has not given any statement regarding this incident.

Many users on social media questioned the silence on the incident that happened in front of the Prime Minister.
