“Since the compensation amount has not been paid to the petitioners till date, even though the land was acquired in 1961 and more than 60 years have passed since then, this Court orders that the District Collector, Land Acquisition Officer and his salary The Executive Officer of Angol Zilla Parishad will not be released until the compensation is paid to the petitioners,” the High Court said.

Affected villagers in five villages of Angul district have been trying for the past 51 years to get compensation for 62 acres of land that was submerged due to a minor irrigation project. Although the land was submerged, it continued to be recorded in the name of the villagers and they had to pay land tax all these years as the government did not issue a notification for the acquisition of the land parcel.
