‘Not vote bank, development is our government’s priority’: PM Modi in Karnataka

World NewsIndia News'Not vote bank, development is our government's priority': PM Modi in Karnataka

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government has prioritized growth over vote banks and given the state double-engine growth, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday launched the party’s campaign for the April-May state assembly elections. He said.

During his visit, the PM laid the foundation stone and inaugurated various development projects related to irrigation, drinking water and National Highway development project in Yadgir district, considered a Congress stronghold. The ruling BJP in the state is up against the Congress for the assembly elections.

Our government’s priority is not a vote bank, our priority is development. You all blessed me in 2014, and entrusted me with a huge responsibility. I know that as long as even one district of the country remains behind in the scale of development, the country cannot progress. Therefore, we have encouraged the desire for development in those districts which were declared backward by the previous government. Our government has launched aspirational districts program in more than 100 such districts of the country including Yadgir.

PM Modi said that the next 25 years are going to be ‘Amrit Kaal’ for every citizen and state, and during this period a developed India will be built. We have to make a developed India in this Amritkal. India can develop only when every citizen of the country, every family and every state is involved in this campaign. India can progress only when everyone lives better, be it a farmer working in the fields or a worker working in industries. India can develop only when the crops in the fields are good and the factories also expand,” he said.

This is the Prime Minister’s second visit to the election hub of Karnataka this month. He was in Hubli to inaugurate the National Youth Festival on January 12, during which he held a grand road show. The importance of the trip also increases, as the ruling BJP is gearing up for assembly elections in the state and the Kalyana Karnataka (Hyderabad Karnataka) region is very important in the BJP’s electoral calculations.

With the objective of providing safe and adequate drinking water to all households through individual household tap connections, Modi laid the foundation stone of the Yadgir multi-village drinking water supply scheme under the Jal Jeevan Mission at Kodikal. A water treatment plant of 117 MLD will also be constructed under the scheme. Projects, which cost more than 2,050 crore, will provide drinking water to around 2.3 lakh households in over 700 rural hamlets and three towns in Yadgir district.

During the visit, the Prime Minister also inaugurated the Narayanpur Left Bank Canal – Extended Renovation and Modernization Project (NLBC – ERM). The project can irrigate 4.5 lakh hectares of command area with a canal with a capacity of 10,000 cusecs. It will benefit more than three lakh farmers in 560 villages of Kalaburagi, Yadgir and Vijayapura districts. The total cost of the project is approx. 4,700 crore, read a statement from the Karnataka government.

He also laid the foundation stone of 65.5 km section of NH-150C. It is part of the 6-lane greenfield road project Surat-Chennai Expressway. It is being built at a cost of approx. 2,000 crores. At Malkhed village in Kalburgi district, he distributed title deeds to the eligible beneficiaries of these newly declared revenue villages.

The Prime Minister said that his government is trying to reduce another challenge of North Karnataka namely connectivity. “Whether it is agriculture, industry or tourism, connectivity is equally important for all. Today, when the country is emphasizing connectivity-related infrastructure, Karnataka is also reaping the benefits of being a dual-engine government. The Surat-Chennai Economic Corridor will also benefit a large part of North Karnataka. New industries have opened up across the region due to the connectivity of the country’s two major port cities.

Taking a jibe at the previous governments, Modi said they did not think how to improve the condition of districts like Yadgir. “We have the example of Yadgir in North Karnataka. The potential of this sector is second to none. Despite this potential, the region has lagged far behind in the journey of development. The previous governments had neglected their responsibility by declaring many districts including Yadgir as backward. Previous governments have not taken the time to think about what is causing this area’s underdevelopment, how to address the area’s underdevelopment, let alone work hard.

Reacting to Leader of Opposition in Karnataka, PM Modi’s announcement, Siddaramaiah said the BJP was “eating on food” prepared by the previous Congress government headed by him.

Reacting to Modi’s distribution of house title deeds to residents of Lambani Thanda, Siddaramaiah said the BJP is trying to project that it has turned Lambani Thanda into a revenue village while In fact, he did nothing. “Mallikarjun Kharge made efforts to convert Thanda into a revenue village in the 1990s. When Kagudu Thimpappa was the revenue minister in our government, amendments were made to the Forest Act and the Land Reforms Act for this purpose. We made Thanda a revenue village. All preparations were made to convert it into a revenue village, but the BJP government did nothing in the last three-and-a-half years,” he said.

“We cooked, and they are eating. After we did everything, now they are presenting that they did everything,” he added.

Karnataka Congress chief DK Shivakumar said Modi is giving “chocolate” as elections are around the corner. He did not come when people were in trouble because of the flood. It would be better if they discuss their action plan for youth employment, why farmers’ income is not doubled, cooking gas prices are not reduced, why the concerned ministers are not held accountable for the PSI scam. Held, about corruption. And about Yatinal and Nirani’s comments,” Sivakumar said.
