‘Settlement…’: Israeli PM Netanyahu on killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar – Times of India

Hours after the senior leader of Hamas Yahya SinwarPrime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday said this Israel has “settled his score” with “the man who committed the worst massacre in the history of our people since the Holocaust”.
During his address to the families of the hostages, Netanyahu said the killing of Sinuar was an important moment in the war, but the mission was not yet complete.
“The one who committed the worst massacre in the history of our people since the Holocaust, the mass murderer who killed thousands of Israelis, kidnapped hundreds of our people, was eliminated today by our heroic soldiers,” Netanyahu said
“Today, as promised, we settled accounts with him. Today, evil has suffered a heavy blow, but our mission is not yet complete,” he added.
Netanyahu, during the speech, also reiterated his “supreme duty” to return the hostages to Hamas
“This is an important moment in the war. We will go full force until all your loved ones – our loved ones – are brought home. This is our highest duty. It is my supreme duty.”
Netanyahu also addressed the people of Gaza and said that Sinwar had destroyed their lives and his death was an opportunity to “finally break free from his tyranny”.
“Sinwar destroyed your life. He told you he was a lion, but he practically hid in a dark tunnel and was eliminated when he fled in panic from our soldiers. His removal is an important milestone in ending the Hamas axis of evil.
“Hamas will no longer rule Gaza,” Netanyahu promises. “This is the beginning of the post-Hamas day, and this is an opportunity for you, the people of Gaza, to finally be free from its tyranny.”
Netanyahu also said Sinwar’s killing made it clear to critics in Israel and abroad why his government insisted on continuing the war — “why we insisted, in the face of all the pressure, on entering Rafah, the Hamas stronghold where Sinwar and many of the killers went into hiding.”
Meanwhile, The White House also released a statement from President Joe Biden on the death of Yahya Sinwar and said it was a good day for Israel, for the United States and for the world.
“Early this morning, Israeli authorities informed my national security team that a mission they conducted in Gaza likely killed Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar. DNA tests have already confirmed that Sinwar is dead. This is a good day for Israel, for the United States, and for the world. As the leader of the terrorist group Hamas, Sinwar is responsible for the deaths of thousands of Israelis, Palestinians, Americans and citizens of more than 30 countries,” the statement said.
Sinwar was the mastermind behind the October 7 massacres, rapes and kidnappings. It was on his orders that Hamas terrorists invaded Israel to deliberately – and with unspeakable savagery – kill and slaughter civilians, Holocaust survivors, children in front of their parents and parents in front of their children,” the statement added.
The Israel Defense Forces killed the “mass murderer” and October 7 head Yahya Sinwar.
The mass murderer Yahya Sinwar, responsible for the massacre and atrocities of October 7, was liquidated today by IDF (Israeli military) soldiers,” Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katze said in a statement.
The mastermind of the October 7 attack, Sinwar, along with Mohammed Deif, the head of Hamas’ armed wing, is believed to have planned the surprise attack on Israel on October 7. That attack killed an estimated 1,200 Israelis, mostly civilians, and ignited a conflict that has killed more than 42,000 Palestinians in Gaza, according to local health authorities.
Hamas said the attack was carried out in retaliation for Israel’s treatment of Palestinians and aimed to return international attention to the Palestinian cause. In May, the International Criminal Court prosecutor requested arrest warrants for Sinwar, Deif and Ismail Haniyeh for their alleged involvement in the attack. While Israel claims it killed Deif in a July strike, Hamas claims he is still alive.
