A person with Eczema or atopic dermatitis will experience patches of dry, itchy skin that eventually crack, bleed or become infected and are usually difficult to treat, but according to skin care and health experts, there are a few tried and tested remedies. There are home remedies that can reduce itching, inflammation and other symptoms. However, consulting a good dermatologist and developing a personalized treatment plan for you is the best way forward.

In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Sarvaya C Tipperni, dermatologist, cosmetologist and trichologist at Manipal Hospitals, Bangalore shared, “The natural way to treat eczema is through organic products and creams, diet and lifestyle changes/management. They help prevent eczema flare-ups, especially in winter, when symptoms are at their worst. It should be kept in mind that these natural remedies cannot cure eczema, but they can help manage symptoms and flare-ups. Help prevent breakouts. Often, natural ingredients like coconut oil and aloe vera gel are used to moisturize dry, cracked skin. In addition, they help reduce inflammation by reducing inflammation. and also help prevent infection by suppressing the growth of harmful bacteria.”

According to him, the main ways to treat facial eczema include-

1. Apple Cider Vinegar: It is popular as a home remedy for many conditions, including skin conditions such as eczema. The National Eczema Association (NEA) says that apple cider vinegar can help with symptoms. However, the NEA advises caution because vinegar acids can damage soft tissue.

How to use wet wrap or bath: To use apple cider vinegar in a wet wrap –

  • Mix 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in 1 cup of warm water.
  • Apply the solution on cotton/gauze.
  • Cover this dressing with a clean cotton cloth.
  • Keep it in this place for 3 hours.

Aloe Vera: A 2017 systematic review documents the effects of aloe vera on human health. Reports suggest that aloe vera

  • Helps heal wounds.
  • Strengthens the immune system.
  • Possesses antibacterial properties
  • Possesses antimicrobial properties

3. Colloidal Oatmeal: It is also known as Avena sativa. It is sourced from oats that have been ground and boiled. It is then used on the skin for its healing properties. According to a 2015 study, lotions made from colloidal oatmeal show antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, leading to –

  • Scaling
  • Roughness
  • Dryness of the skin
  • Severity of itching

How to use: Lotions and creams that contain non-colloidal oatmeal without any additives or fragrances can be considered.

4. Coconut Oil: It contains beneficial fatty acids that increase moisture in the skin, thus helping with dry skin and eczema. In addition, virgin coconut oil strengthens the skin by preventing inflammation and increasing the skin’s barrier condition. One study also found that using the oil for 8 weeks improved eczema symptoms in children.

How to use: Apply cold-pressed coconut oil to the affected skin/area several times a day after bathing. It would even be advised to use it before going to bed to keep the skin moisturized throughout the night. Note: If you are allergic to coconut oil, it is better to avoid using it.

5. Honey: When honey is applied directly to eczema-affected skin, it helps to prevent infection and speed up healing in addition to moisturizing the skin. It is a natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory agent that has been used for many years!

How to use: Soak the honey on the affected area for a while. But due to its sticky nature, it is better to use it a few hours before bathing.

6. Tea Tree Oil: Made from the leaves of Melaleuca alternifolia, this oil helps treat skin problems (including eczema). The oil’s antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing properties help soothe dry and itchy skin (which in turn helps prevent infection).

How to use: Tea tree oil can be mixed with a carrier oil, such as almond or olive oil, and applied directly to the affected area.

Dr Satwati Khare Shukla highlights, “There are different types of eczema but the most common type is known as atopic dermatitis. It is a very common skin condition that causes very rough patches of skin, often With redness and peeling.” According to him, apart from consulting dermatologists for expert medical advice, you can try these simple yet highly effective home remedies:

  • The easiest and most effective treatment is to make changes to avoid or get rid of anything that triggers an allergic reaction. However, try not to count on an instant answer. Eczema is easier said than done.
  • Facial eczema starts in winter, and is a very common problem in children, especially those under 8-9 years of age.
  • This problem contains some allergic components, and especially in winter season, it is very active. So a good solution is to use oat meal, which is actually a very natural ingredient that can be used right from the kitchen. Also, fresh malai which is commonly found in every Indian home kitchen is a very common method that can be used. It contains natural ingredients that contain a lot of lactic acid, which provides some protection as well as moisture.
  • Also, a person suffering from facial eczema should try to avoid allergenic ingredients such as fragrances and cosmetics as much as possible and try to use natural ingredients as much as possible. .

These are some of the remedies that can be used to treat facial eczema but it is best to consult your dermatologist and come up with a treatment plan that works best for you. As with any home remedy, it can do more harm than good. It’s always best to get professional advice!
