The King and Queen will join the congregation in Sydney as the Australian tour begins

The king will attend a church service in Sydney to begin the monarch’s first tour of Australia since ascending to the throne.

Charles and Camilla’s official engagements in the country will begin with a trip to St. Thomas Anglican Church for a service led by the Most Reverend Archbishop Kanishka Raffel.

Security arrangements for Sunday suggest the couple will meet well-wishers afterwards.

They landed in Australia on Friday before the Queen met a 12-year-old boy with a serious blood disorder.

A king and queen touch a town in Australia

Kai, who suffers from aplastic anemia, presented her with flowers after she got off the plane at Sydney Airport – fulfilling her dream of meeting a member of the royal family.

Shortly afterwards, the Sydney Opera House was illuminated with a four-minute projection of photographs of the King and Queen to mark their arrival.

They then met with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and his fiancee Jodie Hayden and Australia’s Governor-General Sam Mostyn.

A photo was released of the couple at the Governor-General’s official residence, Admiralty, while they had a day off on Saturday.

Their six-day visit includes just two-and-a-half days of official engagements to give the king enough time to rest amid his cancer treatment.

Prior to the tour, the King received the honorary titles of Admiral of the Fleet, Field Marshal and Marshal in three services of the Australian Defense Force (ADF).

The appointments were made by the Governor-General, who said they represented an important symbol of the relationship between the UK and Australia.

To mark the tour, the Association of Commonwealth Nations (ACU) has also announced its own Royal Commonwealth Scholarship Programme.

The new scheme will offer fellowships, studentships and funded PhDs aimed at solving the economic, social and environmental crises facing Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

The Commonwealth has 25 small island developing states, including Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.

King Charles said he was “delighted” to have inspired the new initiative.

“There is so much we can learn from each other as we work together across the Commonwealth to address the major challenges of our age and, as these Small Island Developing States Fellowships do, to address them where they are felt most acutely,” he said.

“I fervently hope that these new scholarships will play an important role in fostering the free exchange of knowledge and advancing the spirit of mutual support that underpins our community—today, tomorrow, and toward a brighter future for all.”
