World NewsIndia NewsThe WFI chief approached the Delhi High Court for an FIR against the wrestlers for extortion.

Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament (MP) Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh approached the Delhi High Court on Monday, along with some of the country’s leading wrestlers, including Vinesh. A First Information Report (FIR) was called against. Phogat and Sakshi Malik for extortion and blackmail amid allegations of sexual harassment against them.

Apart from Phogat and Malik, the petition seeks action against wrestlers Bajrang Punia, Sangeeta Phogat, Anshu Malik and Sonam Malik.

The petition comes in the wake of a massive uproar and protest by wrestlers at Jantar Mantar, demanding action against Bhushan for alleged sexual harassment.

The matter is likely to be heard later this week.

In his petition, Singh alleged that Vinesh Phogat was the main and first person who started blackmailing him to resign as WFI president on the pretext of protesting against him.

Singh said that she is a victim of mental harassment and defamation, whose meaningful life and dignity have been mocked by some women wrestlers. He claimed that he had leveled sexual harassment allegations against him simply because of some trivial matter regarding sports support, due to which he did not cooperate with them.

He also accused the media of acting as ‘janta adalat’ or ‘people’s courts’ and interfering in court proceedings.

“The critical distinction between the guilty and the accused has been completely ignored by the media by placing at stake the basic principles of ‘presumption of innocence until proven guilty’ and ‘guilt beyond reasonable doubt’,” the petition said. .

Singh has been accused by some of the country’s leading wrestlers including Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik and Ravi Dahiya of sexually harassing women wrestlers and acting like a dictator.

The Union Sports Ministry on Saturday asked the WFI to suspend “all ongoing activities with immediate effect”.
