A private school in Kochi was closed on Monday after two students tested positive for norovirus and 15 others showed symptoms of the highly contagious viral disease, the state health department said.

State Health Minister Veena George said that all measures are being taken to localize and control the infection. The affected children were aged between 5 and 10 years. Some parents also exhibit symptoms. Samples from the children were tested at the regional virology lab in Alappuzha after many of them started vomiting and had diarrhoea.

“We have launched a vigorous campaign to contain its spread. All water bodies will be checked and super-chlorination has also been started. We have also isolated the affected people and set up isolation wards. have been opened,” said Ernakulam District Medical Officer V Jayashree.

Local residents have been advised to maintain strict hygiene, boil water and cook shellfish and other items at high temperatures.

Experts said that norovirus spreads through contaminated water, food and close contact with an infected person. Its main symptoms are diarrhoea, vomiting and abdominal pain. It is a curable disease but highly contagious.

“It is a treatable virus that mainly affects children. Symptomatic treatment is required and many patients become rapidly dehydrated,” said a doctor at Alappuzha Medical College Hospital, who He declined to reveal his name.

Last year, a norovirus outbreak was reported from a men’s hostel in Alappuzha.
