Konlovat Witedseren produced a brilliant performance on Sunday to beat Viktor Axelsen in the final. India Open. In a three-game match that lasted 63 minutes, Wittedsen won 22–20, 10–21, 21–12 to claim his first Super 750 title. He also became the first player to beat Axelsen that year. The Danish world number one had earlier beaten Kodai Narawaka in the final of the Malaysia Open last week.

Wittedsaran produced a brilliant performance at New Delhi’s KD Jadhav Indoor Hall, beating Axelsen 22-20 in a thrilling first game. The Danish shuttler was on game point as he led 20-19, but the Thailand-born shuttler took three points in a row as the crowd roared at Witedsern’s fightback.

Axelsen, however, reverted to his attacking game at the change of ends, displaying semi-final-like smashes against Jonathan Christie, as he made easy work of the 21-year-old Wittedsen. However, the youngster changed his strategy slightly to include Axelsen in the rallies and eventually caught the world No.1 shuttler, as he started to feel the heat later.

Earlier in the day, another world No. 1 – Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi – suffered a three-game defeat in women’s singles at the India Open. South Korea’s NC Young, who shares a healthy rivalry with Yamaguchi, edged out the Japanese shuttler to claim the title on Sunday.

In the men’s doubles final, the Chinese duo of Liang Wei Kang and Wang Chang defeated the third seeded Malaysian Haroon Chia and Suh Wooi Yuk 14-21 21-19 21-18 in the final. Tour title after last year’s victory at the Japan Open.

The other two doubles matches did not take place on the last day of the tournament due to ill health, after two withdrawals, both involving Chinese pairs.
